About Me

What is my background?

ME Aug15.jpg

I’m a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator (CCSE), Essential Somatics Movement Teacher (ESMT), ISMETA registered RSME, Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner (BFRP), Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in training, and PhD.

Unlike many teachers of movement, my main professional background is in quite different areas of work. It was discovering Thomas Hanna’s incredible practice - and getting rid of almost a decade of chronic pain - that changed my life.

So, instead of continuing to work in philosophy, literature, and law, I shifted to help others learn to get rid of pain and move with greater ease!

I was for many years a university lecturer in the UK & the USA, first in philosophy & rhetoric, latterly in film & literature. I practised as a barrister for several years, too - but left legal practice to spend three years overseas doing independent voluntary work (at orphanages, and with small NGOs - on the Galapagos Islands, in Bolivia, and in Lesotho, where I set up a small-sale development project). I’ve also worked as a freelance consultant for small charities in the UK, as a psychotherapist, & latterly as an academic copy-editor.

Brought up in a household where my mum was the main breadwinner but also an avid gardener & amateur herbalist (my dad was healthily sceptical!), I discovered Dr Bach’s remedies as a teenager, & have used them ever since.

I practised yoga for 25 years, & reiki at times, too. I also practised for a few years as a trainee psychotherapist: I was ready to start a PhD in Existential Psychotherapy when I discovered Clinical Somatic Education - and everything changed!

It was only on discovering Clinical Somatic Education in the direct tradition of Thomas Hanna - not least its ability to quickly and effectively eradicate physical pains I’d been told had structural causes & so were ‘untreatable’ - that I decided to re-train and radically change my professional path.

That said, the change was not so radical: as a philosopher, I had long looked for a way to bring philosophy to my work: neither the law nor academia really enabled this, but Thomas Hanna was a philosopher, and Clinical Somatic Education is a truly embodied philophy-in-action.

Also, I’ve found the impact of Clinical Somatic Education on mental health and emotional well-being to be profound. I am Somatic Experiencing Informed, and draw on Dr Peter Levine’s work on embodied psychotherapy, as well as on Stephen Porges’ work on Polyvagal Theory in my own Clinical Somatics teaching and practice. (You will find elements of these in my signature online programme, The SoMA Program.)

Currently in my second year of SE professional training, I do see clients for Somatic Experiencing sessions, as well as using SE in my Clinical Somatics work.

For me, as for many, Clinical Somatics - informed by more recent insights in neuroscience, polyvagal theory, and SE - is the ‘missing piece’ in self-care & caring for others. A way to understand & develop fuller command over myself & the way I move in & through the world, & experience myself in it.

Why do I practise Somatics & Bach?

As mentioned above, I’ve used Bach flower remedies since I was a teenager, & have long found them to be the most effective & appealing of the ‘natural’ remedies.

I come to Thomas Hanna’s work, and Clinical Somatics Education, through & primarily from the perspective of existential & phenomenological philosophy. (I’ve studied philosophy since sixth form at school, & it’s informed all my other studies & professional practice, as well as my experiences & studies of psychotherapy, Bach, reiki, yoga, & other approaches to well-being.)

I’ve carried out postgraduate research on the history of yoga & its incorporation into ‘western’ culture since the late 1800s, as well as practised yoga with a variety of teachers internationally, since first encountering it as a grad student in Iowa in 1994. Dissatisfied with aspects of yoga, I became interested in Peter Blackaby’s approach to yoga, ‘Intelligent Yoga’, which focuses on cutting out yoga asanas that are not necessarily helpful for the human body, & emphasises ‘the innate intelligence of the body (and how to take heed of it)’. Having taken previous weekend courses with Blackaby, I’m finally studying with him on an 8-day training starting April 2022 (after a LONG lockdown delay…).

This, along with my personal experiences (as a client) of both Rolfing & Bowen Technique - as well as chiropractic, osteopathy, massage, acupuncture, Chinese & Western medicine - to try to address chronic & longstanding problems with pain, numbness & other symptoms felt primarily in my right hand & arm, as well as chronic neck pain, is what lead me to train and practise as a Clinical Somatic Educator, having discovered it for myself & had such amazing & long-lasting results from it in a very short time - for my late mother, then in her mid-80s, as well as for myself.

Bach flower remedies & Hanna’s Somatics share some fundamental approaches to healing & self-help that make them work well together, in my view, although I teach them as entirely separate systems (& do not promote the idea that either needs the other to ‘work’).

Both approaches privilege the role & importance of self-awareness & the need for us to actively engage with & participate in our own healing & self-improvement to get truly effective & long-lasting results. I am also currently researching how there are meeting points between the two approaches’ focus on posture and how the body is held.

As such, education is key to both - and this is one reason I practise these systems, & not others, to help others: I believe that for any of us to achieve a sense of ease, of balance - whether emotional or physical, & given those two are inextricably intertwined in any event - the ability to identify areas of dis-ease and im-balance must come from within, as must the awareness to address & improve how we feel at bodily & emotional levels.

Fundamentally, for me practising Hanna Somatics & Bach flower remedies are ways to embody & practically put to use my philosophical beliefs in the value & inevitability of human freedom, the inescapably embodied nature of our being, & the essential importance of being as self-aware & ethically responsible as possible. They are both practices that enable profound transformation for many people, & can hugely enhance self-awareness & the capacity for self-care.

What are my qualifications?

Clinical Somatic Education

I’m a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator and a Certified ESMT (Essential Somatics® Movement Teacher), having trained with Martha Peterson at Essential Somatics®.

I’m also an Associate member of AHSE, an ISMETA member and RSME (Registered Somatic Movement Educator), and a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner in training.

Martha Peterson’s not just an inspirational teacher, but is groundbreaking in bringing Hanna-inspired Clinical Somatic Education - and her own Essential Somatics® Movement as a development of Hanna’s work - to people across the world. She and her teaching team train Clinical Somatic Educators and Essential Somatics® Movement Teachers, and run ‘Fundamentals’ weekends to spread the word & enable the joy & benefits of Clinical Somatics to be experienced by more people, globally. More information about my other wonderful teachers, who work alongside Martha, is available on their websites: Laura Gates; Colm McDonnell.

I’m an active Associate Member of AHSE - The Association for Hanna Somatic Education®. You can read more about AHSE here.

I’m also an RSME - that is, a registered member of ISMETA (International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association). As well as providing a community of fellow somatic educators and practitioners, this membership provides a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (here). As an ISMETA RSME (Registered Somatic Movement Educator), I’m amongst fellow professionals ‘who have met a high standard of eligibility and completed a rigorous application approval process’.

The core purpose of ISMETA ‘is to grow the emerging field of Somatic Movement Education and Therapy. Since 1988 we have ensured that training programs uphold high standards of education and practice, and maintain a professional registry of qualified practioners. We are committed to building the professional community of Somatic Movement Practitioners worldwide and advocating for the profession in legal and governmental arenas. We work to educate the general public about our work and help our colleagues in Integrative Medicine, Human Services, Education and the Arts understand the benefits of Somatic Movement Education and Therapyyou can read more about the aims of ISMETA here.’ You can read more about ISMETA here.

I’m Somatic Experiencing® Informed, which formalises my longstanding interest in the interface between Hanna Somatics and ‘embodied’ therapy work. I’m currently training as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, too. (See below for link to short video about SE: to me, Dr Levine has similar insights to those Dr Hanna had in the 1970s… The beauty of Hanna’s work is that it uses movement to directly address specific stress responses; Levine’s work is more talk-based, and tends not to be used to address physical pain and tension with no apparent ‘traumatic’ cause.)

Essential Somatics’ ESMTT and CSE training programmes require a surprising amount of written work as well as extensive personal practice & required reading, & also requirements to listen to the full library of Thomas Hanna’s lectures & trainings - which we’re fortunate to have access to as Essential Somatics® students.

Note that the CSE certification run by Essential Somatics® is the only Clinical Somatics training, globally, that is an ISMETA Approved Training Program. It is also, from 2022, the only in-person clinical educator training available.

Having completed several postgraduate degrees & taught around the world, I feel qualified to say that the ES training is excellent & well-rounded, & covers not just practical somatic movement training, but pertinent requirements to learn & think about Hanna’s worldview & the philosophical foundations of Somatics.

I am currently training as a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner with SOSI (click here for the SOSI website).

In June 2023 I also attended a Case Study day with Dr Peter Levine in Burlingame, CA, as well as a four-day Master Class in Chronic Pain and Long Covid with Dr Levine. This was in addition to my ongoing training and supervision requirements with SOSI.

I’m also a student member of SEAUK: click here for their website.

Bach flower remedies

BFRP practitioner logo1.JPG

I took all 3 levels of my Bach flower remedy training with the Bach Centre (distance learning for Level 1; then Levels 2 & 3 at the Centre), & am an active and registered BFRP (Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner).

Amongst other commitments, BFRPs commit to the Bach Centre’s Code of Practice (including using only Dr Bach’s original method for choosing remedies) & to undertake at least 20 hours’ continuing professional development per year.

Being a BFRP also means I can be your mentor for the Bach Centre’s Level 1 Distance Learning programme if you ask for me by name when you apply to them for the course. Let me know if you have an interest in formalising your learning about the remedies in this way.

Academic & professional background

I have an undergraduate MA (First Class Hons) in Philosophy (Aberdeen, 1994); postgraduate MAs in, respectively, Communication Studies (Film Studies) (University of Iowa, 1996) and Nature (Anthrozoology & Philosophy) (University of Wales-TSD, 2013); a PhD in Cultural Studies (Film & Ethnography) (Sheffield Hallam University, 2001), & both a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (2001) and Bar Vocational Course (2002) professional qualification from Nottingham Law School.

I’m an experienced copy-editor (working mostly for philosophy, history, & legal journals) with professional qualifications from Chapterhouse. I also have TEFL qualifications & experience; a Foundation Course & Certificate in counselling & psychotherapy, as well as experience as an existential psychotherapist & also as a bereavement support volunteer with Cruse (whose training I’ve also completed). I’ve taken & continue to occasionally take professional development courses in the fields of bereavement support & existential psychotherapy, especially where these are helpful to my Bach remedy practice.

A 10-minute video of Dr Peter Levine, founder of Somatic Experiencing, explaining his insights about animal responses to stress/trauma, that shaped his very ‘embodied’ approach to psychotherapy.

Your Safety in Livestreaming, In-person, and in Replay.

Your health and safety is paramount, for that reason the following terms and conditions apply without exception.

It is your responsibility to ensure

  • There is sufficient space to perform the exercises safely and move freely without obstacles or obstructions, free from furniture, equipment and other hazards: for example hot drinks, pets, etc. There should be available a minimum four square metres per person.

  • Any equipment is safe and in a suitable condition for the activity being performed. The surrounding floor space is entirely clear to remove any hazards that may increase the risk of slips, trips or falls. It is advised you have bare feet for this reason.

  • There are no distractions throughout the duration of the session: in particular, you should please remove pets, small children, and other distractions away from the area.

  • There is sufficient heating, lighting, ventilation and hydration.

  • You work within you own limits, stop and rest when needed, and work with movements and exercises within your abilities and do not do more than you are capable of.

  • You work with your camera on when attending a live online class. (Livestreaming services are not offered to you if you are not prepared to switch on your camera so Samantha Holland can see you in live classes/clinical sessions at all times. Failure to do this will result in loss of the lesson with no compensation and removal from the livestream.

By entering the SoMA Program and any recorded or live class you are agreeing that you are fit and healthy and able to work at the level of the class you are taking part in. If you are experiencing pain then you should not take part in the session.

If you have any medical conditions, injuries or other conditions which may affect your participation in the proposed exercise or somatic activity you must gain consent from their GP or other medical professional prior to participation.

You are responsible for your own body. Your ability to perform movements and exercises may vary from session to session depending on your wellbeing, fitness, tiredness, and stress levels. You should inform Samantha Holland of any changes in your health or physical state. Perform exercises and movements at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Do not ignore it if you feel pain, and do not ignore this warning to cease or lessen movement.

Please listen to and follow the guidance Samantha Holland offers you and apply it. If you choose to not follow the instructions or ignore the instructions then Samantha Holland is not liable for the outcome as you may be placing your body into a position or state that is not appropriate for you. If you continually choose to ignore guidance provided, Samantha Holland may withhold services from you with immediate effect.

If you are currently seeing a GP, physiotherapist, Consultant, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, or any other medical professional for physical or mental health issues it is your responsibility to gain clearance from them for you to exercise and/or participate in somatic movement activities. It is also your responsibility to know what your condition is so that you can accurately convey this to me when appropriate.

If there is any change in your health such as an illness, accident or injury, possible pregnancy or you are placed on medication please ask your healthcare provider if you are able to continue with your sessions. You must let me know of any changes, no matter if you feel that they are not relevant as it is highly likely that you may need an adaptation in some way or parts of the scheduling may no longer be appropriate for you. It may be necessary to seek further advice from your medical professional before lessons can resume.

Clients with low/high blood pressure and/or cardiac irregularities should consult their GP prior to attending class and seek their guidance.

Clinical Somatic Education is non-competitive. Please work within a level of comfort. Other people in class may be able to do things you would like to be able to do, but that does not mean that is the right level for you. Apply the knowledge and guidance you have received about your own body, conditions, and/or injuries.

Samantha Holland reserves the right to ask you to stop during as session if concerned for your welfare, her welfare or the welfare of other participants in class.

Samantha Holland Shall Provide the Services with Due Care, Skill and Abilit

Other than as set out above, all warranties and representations are excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law. Due to the nature of movement and sensory awareness exercises and capabilities, the differing speeds at which human somas respond to somatic (and other) practices, and the different levels of commitment and engagement, Samantha does not guarantee any particular results.

Class Terms: Good Class Etiquette in Livestream Classes and Events

Out of consideration to the instructor and others in the class, please arrive so that the class can start on time and you are able to participate in the warm up, which is an important part of the class. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late for the class, you may not be able to join in.

In livestream make sure you are in the waiting room five (5) minutes before published start time. vLivestreamed classes have moments where the class can chat and moments where the class is muted. This is for health and safety reasons. If you need to ask a question you can do so at various points in the lesson. You must have your mute button on at all other times.

Always bring water to keep yourself hydrated during class and after.

If you have to carry emergency medication for asthma, allergies or any reason please ensure you have it readily available at every session.

Wear clothes that are comfortable for you to move in. Wearing layers to class is a good idea as you will be able to respond to your own body’s needs during and after the session.

Make sure you wear bare feet or gripper socks when doing classes and lessons. Grippers prevent slips and falls and are seriously recommended for any clients with low bone density and clients with balance issues as they also develop proprioception skills.

In Samantha Holland’s experience, practising somatic movement has a multitude of beneficial effects; however, it is not a substute for psychological therapy and may not be suitable for everyone.

Always seek the advice of your GP if you are experiencing physical or mental health difficulties and discuss with a qualified mental health professional before making any changes to existing psychological treatment.

Participating in relaxation classes is not recommended for persons experiencing active post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major trauma. Do not undertake any relaxation content if this applies to you (unless your mental health care provider has discussed this with you and deemed it acceptable).

Never participate in relaxation and sensing exercises whilst driving or operating machinery.

Samantha Holland reserves the right to discontinue or alter any or all of her website services (including the SoMA Program), and to stop publishing her website, at any time at her sole discretion without notice or explanation; and save to the extent expressly provided otherwise in these terms and conditions, you will not be entitled to any compensation or other payment upon the discontinuance or alteration of any website services, or if she stops publishing the website.

In participating in my online classes, workshops or programmes, you are participating as yourself, and are not using the session to claim the knowledge or rights to teach these systems to any other person. My classes are not teacher training, nor do they entitle you to hold yourself out as trained in Clinical Somatic Education, Essential Somatics®, or similar. For that, you need to undergo professional training, supervision and examination.

Samantha Holland is the owner or the licensee of all Intellectual Property Rights and all other rights in the classes, lessons, materials and content that she uses within the classes and lessons, and nothing in this agreement or otherwise shall operate to transfer the ownership of the Intellectual Property Rights in such material or content to you or to any other person.

You may not at any time copy, reproduce, publish in any form, share, sell, dispose of or otherwise make available to a third party in any way any of the content or materials that I use in the SoMA Program or on my website or otherwise.

You may not without my prior written consent make any audio or visual recordings of all or any part of any classes or lessons with me or provided by me.

I may make audio or visual recordings of all or any part of the livestreamed classes and discussions.

Within the SoMA Program recorded live classes you waive any rights now or in the future to an appearance fee.

Note that prices for Clinical sessions in locations other than Geddes, by Nairn, may be higher due to travel and/or venue costs. Prices for Packages are also listed, which offer a discount for multiple sessions booked ahead.

Clinical Somatics 1:2:1 initial assessment + session (90-105 mins) £80

Clinical Somatics 1:2:1 follow-up sessions (75-90 mins) £70

Packages (paid ahead):

3 x Clinical Somatics sessions (in Geddes) £63.33 each £190

5 x Clinical Somatics sessions (in Geddes) £60 each £300

[Between 4 and 6 sessions is recommended - although just 1 can make a big difference: If you pay for a 3-session package and then decide to book more sessions, you will be charged at a lower rate for those further sessions.]

Online 1:2:1 Clinical Somatics initial assessment + session (60-75 mins) £60

Online 1:2:1 Clinical Somatics Movement 1:2:1 follow-up sessions (60 mins) £50

Online 3 x 1:2:1 Clinical Somatics follow-up sessions (60 mins) £135

I teach online Hanna Somatics Movement Classes as part of the SoMA Program and SoMA Essentials. They are also available to anyone having clinical sessions with me. Please contact me for details.

Please contact me with any questions, or if you’d like to ask about in-person group classes and/or workshops in the local area (e.g. Nairn, Forres, Auldern, Croy, Cawdor - also in and near Sheffield, where I still see clients and run workshops several times a year).

Between 4 and 6 clinical sessions are usually most beneficial, and that - especially if combined with home practice of a few movements daily - the aim of Clinical Somatics is to give you the tools to then take control of your own movement practice, so you would’t expect to come back for more clinical sessions (although some people choose to, and movement classes can be extremely beneficial).

If you pay for a 3-session package and then decide to book more sessions, you will be charged at a lower rate for any subsequent sessions.

NB: If you have a low income & the only barrier to your booking Somatics sessions is financial, please get in touch with me to see if I’m able to work with you for a lower fee for a few sessions.

I’m also a practising BFRP: Bach Flower Remedy Consultations include a bottle of your individualised remedy:

Bach Flower Remedy Consultation (60-75mins) £35

Follow-up Bach Consultation (60-75 mins) £35

Follow-up Bach Consultation (30-45 mins) £25

Bach remedy bottle made up to order (P&P extra) £10

My fees for Bach consultations are as low as I can make them, in the spirit of Dr Bach’s desire to make the remedies widely accessible.

(Please also note that rather than expect people to come for lots of sessions, I encourage clients who find the Remedies helpful to learn more about them so they can treat themselves. This doesn’t mean I won’t see you for multiple consultations if that’s what you prefer - but does mean that after 3 or 4 consultations with me, I’d ask you to think about whether you might like to learn more about the remedies for yourself.)

I can be your tutor for the Bach Centre’s Level 1 Distance Learning, which is an excellent way to learn - but I can also recommend books and free online resources to you.
